Project Background

The Astana Light Rail Transit (LRT) is the first urban rail transit system in Kazakhstan's capital, Astana (now known as Nur-Sultan), representing a major milestone in the country's transportation infrastructure modernization. The LRT line connects major transportation hubs, commercial districts, and residential areas. Once completed, it will significantly alleviate urban traffic pressure and serve the daily commuting needs of the capital's residents. The depot, as a core supporting facility of the LRT system, handles critical functions including train parking, inspection, and maintenance.

Burkaf partnered with China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) to provide hot-dip galvanized cable trays and flexible metal conduits for the depot. The products need to adapt to the temperature fluctuations and seismic requirements of Kazakhstan's continental climate.


Challenges

  • Extreme Temperature Fluctuations of Continental Climate: Astana is the second coldest capital in the world, with winter temperatures dropping as low as -40°C to -50°C and summer temperatures exceeding 30°C, resulting in enormous annual temperature variations. Products must maintain stable mechanical performance and dimensional accuracy under both extreme low and high temperatures.

  • Seismic Requirements for Rail Transit: Parts of Kazakhstan are located in seismic zones. As critical transportation infrastructure, the LRT must meet strict seismic design standards.

  • Special Operating Conditions of the Depot: The depot experiences frequent train movements, generating vibration, impact, and other dynamic loads, demanding high stability and durability from the cable tray and support system.

  • Installation and Maintenance Under Extreme Cold Conditions: Extreme low temperatures present challenges for on-site construction and later maintenance. Products must have good low-temperature toughness and ease of installation.
