Project Overview

The Maputo Data Center is the first Tier III-certified data center in Mozambique, marking a significant milestone in the country's digital transformation journey. Owned and operated by Telecomunicações de Moçambique (TdM), the national telecommunications provider, this facility supports critical IT infrastructure for government, financial institutions, and enterprise customers across Mozambique and the broader East African region.

Burkaf partnered with Huawei Technologies, the main contractor and procurement entity for the project, to supply perforated cable trays, C-channels, and grounding wires for Phase 1 of this landmark data center.


Challenges

  • Tropical Climate Conditions
    Mozambique has a tropical climate with high temperatures, high humidity, and seasonal heavy rainfall. Data center infrastructure must withstand these environmental conditions while maintaining reliable performance and corrosion resistance.

  • Tier III Certification Requirements
    Tier III data centers require concurrent maintainability – every component must be maintainable without shutting down the facility. The cable management system must support this requirement through organized routing and easy accessibility.

  • High-Density Cable Management
    As a carrier-neutral data center serving multiple clients, the facility requires dense cable layouts for power distribution, network connectivity, and telecommunications infrastructure. Cable trays must accommodate high volumes while allowing for future expansions and customer additions.

  • Proper Heat Dissipation
    High-density server environments generate significant heat. Cable management solutions must not impede airflow, which is critical for cooling efficiency and equipment reliability.

  • International Procurement Standards
    With Huawei Technologies as the main contractor, all products were required to meet international quality standards and pass rigorous inspection processes before site acceptance.


Solutions Provided by Burkaf

Perforated Cable Trays

Burkaf supplied perforated (ventilated) cable trays throughout the data center. The perforated design offers:

  • Excellent airflow for cable heat dissipation

  • Easy cable securing with zip ties or lashing

  • Flexibility for frequent cable additions and changes

  • Visibility of cables for inspection and maintenance

C-Channel (Strut Channel) Support System

A complete C-channel system with fittings was provided for mounting cable trays and supporting electrical equipment. The C-channel system features:

  • High load-bearing capacity for heavy cable bundles

  • Compatibility with industry-standard accessories

  • Easy adjustment for future reconfigurations

Grounding Wire System

Dedicated grounding wires and connectors were supplied to ensure:

  • Electrical continuity across all cable tray sections

  • Reliable connection to the data center's main grounding grid

  • Protection against static discharge and electrical faults

  • Compliance with Tier III safety requirements

Tropical Climate Adaptation

All products were finished to resist tropical environmental conditions:

  • Corrosion-resistant coating for high-humidity operation

  • Materials selected for thermal stability under temperature variations

  • Durable construction suitable for long-term deployment


Project Results

  • The Maputo Data Center Phase 1 was successfully completed and commissioned in 2024, becoming Mozambique's first Tier III-certified data center.
